Project Lifesaver International was established in April of 1999 to use state of the art technology in assisting those who care for victims of Alzheimer’s, dementia, Autism, Down syndrome and any other cognitive conditions that cause wandering.  The Project Lifesaver program places personalized radio transmitters, or GPS locators, on identified persons.  Local emergency teams are trained to respond with specialized equipment resulting in an average rescue of 30 minutes or less.  Here in Lancaster County, the program is run and maintained by The Pilot Club of Lancaster.  They have partnered with numerous police agencies to locate wandering individuals.  There are currently 18 individuals throughout Lancaster County that are registered.  The East Hempfield Township Police Department is proud to be involved firsthand in this worthwhile and life-saving project.  We have officers trained to use the search equipment.  Informational brochures are available at the police station, that give details on the program and explain how to apply for a transmitter.
