At 0444hrs, Thursday, December 23, 2021 police were dispatched to Red Carpet Inn - 2101 Columbia Ave. for a disturbance involving a male who was walking around outside of his room, naked, screaming and throwing objects off of the balcony. The first officer on-scene arrived at 0450hrs, and encountered the male, later identified as Joel D. Vazquez-Frias. Vazquez-Frias was observed by the officer throwing objects off of the second floor balcony. The officer approached Vazquez-Frias. Vazquez-Frias immediately began walking towards the officer while displaying a box cutter in his hand, and threatened to injure the officer. The officer retreated, but Vazquez-Frias continued to walk towards the officer with the box cutter in his hand while threatening to injure the officer. The officer repeatedly ordered Vazquez-Frias to drop the box cutter, but he did not. The officer then deployed a taser on Vazquez-Frias. By this point additional officers had arrived on scene, and Vazquez-Frias was taken into custody without further incident. Vazquez-Frias was charged with: Aggravated Assault (F-2); Terroristic Threats (M-1); Criminal Mischief (M-2); Disorderly Conduct (S); and Public Drunkenness (S).

Joel D. Vazquez-Frias is presumed innocent.
