According to Wikipedia, a "Parking Chair" is defined as a chair that is used by a vehicle owner to informally mark a parking space as reserved. Other objects are also used for this purpose, including trash cans, ladders, ironing boards, and similar-sized objects. For curbside parking spaces, two or more items are normally used; for angle spaces, only one is needed. (CITATION HERE)
Unfortunately, what Wikipedia does not tell you is that placing a chair or similar object in the street is illegal. Please keep chairs where they belong - on your property!
Many Lancaster-area vehicle owners who use public street parking face a quandry during snow storm events. They can spend a significant amout of time shoveling out a space for their vehicle, only to have it "taken" by another motorist when they drive away. In order to "protect" their space, they "claim" it using a chair.
Vehicle owners must remember that public streets are just that - public, meaning open and available for all to use. One person cannot "own" a portion of the public roadway. Further, placing chairs or other objects in the roadway is considered littering and causes a traffic hazard for other vehicles and / or snow plows working in the area.
The Manheim Township Police Department kindly reminds everyone of this information and asks that no objects be placed in the roadways during snow storm events.
