When the United States flag becomes worn, torn, faded or soiled, it should be replaced with a new flag. But what do you do with the old one? The answer is not to simply throw it away, but to “retire” it in a dignified way. To help with that, two Manheim Township officers recently took it upon themselves to build a box for tattered flags. Officers Lucas Starsinic and Mark Shivers placed the box outside of Oregon Dairy. They plan to regularly check the box and collect the flags that have been left there. They will then have a flag retirement ceremony so that proper respect and honor can be shown to the flag. The officers also hope to add another box or two in the Township. Thank you to Officers Starsinic and Shivers for putting this program together, and to Oregon Dairy for giving us the space!
