As we quickly approach the Fourth of July and the start of summer, the East Lampeter Township Police Department wants to wish all of our residents, friends, and visitors a fun and safe holiday weekend!
If you are planning on setting off fireworks (and let’s be honest, fireworks can bring a “big bang” to any party…😊), we want to remind you that there are a few rules to follow:
What Fireworks Can I Purchase and Use in PA?
“Consumer Grade” fireworks which contain up to 50 milligrams of explosive material – purchased at retail stores within the Commonwealth
Where Can I Shoot Off Fireworks?
(PA State Law notes..)
- More than 150 feet away from an “occupied structure” which is defined as any structure, building, vehicle, or place adapted for overnight accommodation or business (this includes whether or not any persons are in the structure at the time)
- Must have the permission of the property owner (public or private)
- Cannot set fireworks off from inside or towards a building or vehicle
- Cannot be under the influence of any alcohol or drug
(East Lampeter Ordinance notes…)
- Fireworks cannot be set off after 11pm or prior to 6am without a permit from the Township
Tips for Fireworks
- Know the local and state rules/ordinances/laws where you reside
- Pay attention to the weather – windy and/or dry conditions can be dangerous
- Keep water buckets nearby, consider hosing down the immediate area prior to setting off fireworks
- Never try to “fix” a malfunctioning firework; DO NOT re-light a firework or immediately pick up a firework that failed to go off
- Please be mindful of and considerate for:
- Small children and where people gather to watch
- Our neighbors, family and friends who may be sensitive to the loud report of fireworks
- Our dogs, horses, and other animals which may become frightened and run or suffer from the explosions of fireworks
Be Safe!
Have Fun!
Celebrate our Nation, our Freedoms, and the People which make our Country Great!
