Residents in the Borough of East Petersburg may have noticed a heavy police presence in the late morning and early afternoon as the NLCRPD responded to a reported despondent subject armed with a handgun reportedly threatening suicide. The individual a male, in his thirties, was to be a resident of and the sole occupant of an apartment in the 6100 block of Main Street. The male was alleged to have been involved in a domestic dispute in another Lancaster County jurisdiction where multiple charges were being filed against the individual.
During the initial response effort which began at 09:41 hours NLCRPD officers responded to the area of the report and interviewed involved witnesses and the reporting party. A staging area and operational venue were established at the nearby East Petersburg Fire Department facility. After numerous attempts to contact the subject were met with failure, the NLCRPD requested assistance from the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team.
A team of negotiators and a basic entry team supported by specialized equipment arrived to assist. At approximately 12:40 hours contact was made by SERT negotiators and the subject surrendered and was taken into custody without incident at 12:54 hours. The subject was transported to the Lancaster General Hospital by the NLCRPD after service of a pre-existing evaluation order that was issued for the subject.
NLCRPD Criminal investigators searched the premises and recovered a handgun. The NLCRPD investigation continues into the ownership and possession of the handgun. The name of the subject is being withheld in complience with the rules associated with the confidentiality of the evaluation order that was pre-existing prior to the NLCRPD being notified of the event.
