A peaceful outcome resulted after a tense Warwick Township incident last evening. The duration of the incident was for the operational period of 20:29 hours to 21:48 hours. A 41-year-old male surrendered to NLCRPD officers following a domestic dispute and a brief standoff where the subject was locked in the home and threatening to harm himself. NLCRPD responded to a 911 call detailing reported crisis situation with an adult male with multiple firearms reportedly locked in a bathroom in his home threatening to harm himself and others following a domestic dispute. The other occupants of the dwelling self-evacuated and summoned NLCRPD police assistance. Multiple NLCRPD units responded to the incident and secured a perimeter around the dwelling. The subject was contacted by NLCRPD and subsequently walked out of the residence and surrendered to NLCPRD patrols. The subject was found to be in possession of a concealed handgun on his waistband. This peaceful outcome was the result of training, effective use of de-escalation techniques, and teamwork by the responding NLCRPD team members. There were no injuries, with the subject being transported for an evaluation and appropriate level of care. The NLCRPD response to the scene included seven NLCRPD patrols trained and certified in the CIT program. This is a program to promote collaboration between Law Enforcement, Behavioral Health Organizations, Behavioral Health Advocates, and County Government, and to provide a forum for effective problem solving. CIT serves as a vehicle for consumer, family member and community input into the healing process. The overall goal of the CIT training program is to treat mental illness as a disease, not a crime. Law Enforcement recognizes the value of decreased number of injuries to the officers and consumers, decreased use of force or levels of force employed, improved use of alternatives to arrest and jail, decreased time officers spend in the crisis unit (involuntary commitments), reduced myths and stigma of mental illness. The NLCRPD was assisted by the Lititz Police Department and the Warwick Ambulance in the handling of the situation.
