"Operation Safe Stop is a proactive approach to educate the motoring public that passing a stopped school bus, when children are loading or unloading, is both dangerous and illegal. Law enforcement agencies, school transportation providers, pupil transportation associations, and PennDOT have combined their efforts to raise public awareness about the potential consequences of these traffic violations and reduce the occurrence of illegal school bus passes. Over the past 25 years, PennDOT, along with law enforcement agencies and pupil transportation associations, have worked together to conduct Operation Safe Stop.
On Wednesday, October 19, 2022, the 26th Annual Operation Safe Stop will take place. On this day, several school districts, including the Hempfield School District here in Lancaster, will participate by having their drivers document any illegal passes occurring on their routes during the day. Drivers will attempt to get identifying information regarding the vehicle and file the information with local authorities." (PennDOT)
The NLCRPD is an active participant in the program and will be conducting school bus violation-related details in the East Petersburg area in support of the program. The NLCRPD reminds drivers to stop for school bus signals, be cautious of pedestrian traffic, and help keep our kids safe!
