Passing motorists and users of a popular outdoors recreational area on U.S. Route 322 on Saturday afternoon observed NLCRPD police activity focused on a vehicle and surrounding area, prompting calls to media sources for information on the source of the activity.

On Saturday, January 23, 2021 at approximately 12:36 hours NLCRPD was dispatched to the area of 830 W 28th Division Hwy for a reported attempted suicide with possible firearm involvement. NLCRPD patrols responded and found an occupant seated in the driver's seat. Patrols observed an obvious fatal gunshot wound and cleared the staging EMS unit and secured the scene. The vehicle was found to be locked and entry was gained by the NLCRPD upon authorization from the Deputy Coroner utilizing vehicle lock out tools maintained by the agency .

NLCRPD Criminal Investigation Unit members and the NLCRPD Forensic Services Unit team responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. Two firearms were recovered at the scene. The vehicle was towed from the scene and secured for safe keeping. The Deputy Coroner ruled the death a suicide upon completing her examination. At 14:55 hours the coroner van arrived on scene and at 15:27 hours departed with the deceased.

Based upon the on-scene phase, interview of persons in the area, and associated forensic determinations by the NLCRPD and the Office of the Lancaster County Deputy Coroner the victim a 57-year-old male, a resident of Wayne, PA died as the result of a single self-inflicted gunshot.
