NLCRPD continues the investigation into a Hempfield School District school bus crash this morning, that resulted in minor injury to at least two persons. The crash on May 11th, 2022, at 08:39 hours occurred on Hollow Drive at Graystone Road in the Borough of East Petersburg.
The investigation determined that the driver of the bus proceeded from a stop sign after stopping. The driver of the bus identified as Alison Kauffman, age 74, of the 2300 block of the Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA entered into the intersection without proper clearance while attempting to turn left from Hollow drive onto Graystone Road. As a result of this unlawful turning movement the school bus carrying 32 East Petersburg Elementary School students collided with a 2018 Honda Civic, driven by John A. Eder, age 64, of the 1600 block of Colonial Manor, Lancaster, PA as the vehicle was attempting to turn left onto Hollow Drive from Graystone Road causing minor injury to the driver of the Honda Civic.
As an essential element of the NLCRPD investigation video from the bus was reviewed by the investigating officer. The driver of the bus was observed through onboard dash camera footage proceeding from a stop sign after stopping without proper clearance while attempting to turn left from Hollow drive onto Graystone Road. Current reporting indicated only one student sustained injury as a result of this accident on the bus. Reporting indicates that there were no parties listed as being transported from the scene for treatment of injuries sustain in this crash.
The driver of the bus is being cited with Title 75 Section 3323 (B) Duties at a stop sign, via filing of a summons for the summary offense. The NLCRPD adhered to all agency directives and statutory requirements concerning the investigative and testing protocols associated with the investigations for the classification of operators and vehicles involved. All named persons are presumed to be innocent.
