Walk in complainant at the NLCRPD wanted to report a scam/fraud in which Daniel paid an unknown person $9500 in gift cards. The reporting party advised that on 10/27/22, he was on his computer and his computer screen froze. A message popped up on the screen to contact Microsoft at a listing provided o the screen. The reporting party called the phone number and believed that he was talking to a Microsoft rep. The person on the phone asked The reporting party where he banks. This information was provided and the person on the phone then, “transferred the call to a rep from your bank”.
The “rep from the bank” then provided the reporting party with the account information for all of bank accounts including amount of money that was in each account. Reporting party advised that the monetary amount provided by the person on the phone were exactly correct. The person on the phone then questions the victim about a “pornography charge” on the account. The victim advised that this charge was not a valid charge. .The person then instructed the victim to go to different stores in the area, purchase gift cards, and provide the person on the phone with the gift card numbers and PIN numbers in order to get the “pornography charge” removed from the victims account. The victim then went to the following stores and purchased the following gift cards.

CVS- Apple gift card for $500
Walmart gift card for $2500
Total $9500
The victim advised that the person remained on the phone with him as he went to the above stores and purchased the gift cards. The victim advised that all gift card and PIN numbers were provided to the person on the phone. The actual bank utilized by the victim confirmed he was the victim of fraud and is investigating, the NLCRPD provided the victim with incident reporting and validation of reporting to assist in the fraud recovery process.
