A teen age bicyclist is recovering from moderate injuries sustained in a crash after he entered the roadway into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The NLCRPD responded to the report of a crash involving a bicyclist on Clay Road between Stonecrest Drive and East Newport Road, near a marked rail trail crossing. The crash involved a bicycle operated by a juvenile male, age 16, of a Warwick Township address who entered the roadway from the Warwick Township Facility without stopping and entered the path of an oncoming vehicle. This vehicle a 2008 Chevrolet 210 series was operated by a subject identified as Harry Marks, age 86, of a Hollywood Drive, Lititz, PA address who struck the bicycle and the occupant of the bicycle as it exited the parking lot.
Upon arrival NLCRPD patrols identified the rider of the bicycle as male (16 years old) juvenile who was seated on the curb, with obvious cuts bleeding on his left upper arm. The juvenile was complaining of pain coming from his head and legs. EMS personnel arrived and loaded the subject for transport to Lancaster General Hospital for further treatment.
The striking vehicle had a cracked front windshield, dented hood, and scuffs on the front bumper. The driver advised he was traveling North on Clay Road and was approaching the Warwick/Ephrata Rail Trail crossing. (This crossing allows the right of way to vehicles and not to pedestrians or bicycles crossing the path). He advised he traveled over this crossing and suddenly noticed a bicycle crossing the roadway from East to West. He advised it was exiting the parking lot entrance where vehicles enter or exit, and not even using the trail crossing.
Citations will be filed by the NLCRPD upon completion of the investigation against the juvenile operator for violations concerning entering a roadway and the associated requirements
