On July 4, 2022, @ 01:50 AM NLCRPD was called to the 2400 Block of Franklin Drive in East Petersburg for the report of a disturbance. Neighbors reported that the man next door was screaming and "banging on the walls" of his home. When police arrived to investigate, they encountered the adult suspect outside, on a public sidewalk, in front of the home. The man’s behavior was erratic and consistent with a mental health issue and or drugs and or alcohol. Police also noted that the suspect had a kitchen knife protruding from his front pocket. When police attempted to engage the suspect in conversation, the suspect ran and retreated back inside his home. Minutes later the man exited the rear of the residence. Again, Officers attempted to speak to the suspect, continuing to assess the scenario. Through conversation, witness information, prior contacts, and observations on the scene, Officers determined the male was in immediate danger to himself and or the others and required immediate professional care. The suspect refused to comply with police instructions. Using a Taser, Officers were successfully able to disarm the suspect and take him into custody without further incident or injury. The suspect was taken to the hospital where he was involuntarily committed for a mental health evaluation. Criminal charges associated with disorderly conduct, assault, and resisting arrest have been filed.
