“and I decided to commit suicide by cop” – That was in the text of an opening paragraph of a letter sent recently to the NLCRPD.
This was the outcome from a scenario where shots were fired by a barricaded subject during a March 2021 incident handled by the NLCRPD. Take a moment and read the entire text of the letter attached to this release in a multimedia file. Success is the product of teamwork and training, and the courage to do what you are trained to do – whatever it takes to safeguard the community. Investing in classroom and scenario training, networking, and integrated response within a multi-disciplinary framework are the keys to success.
The real work begins after the scene is resolved and charges have been filed. There must be a seamless treatment program including the mental health community, probation department, and the court systems providing diversionary and treatment-based programs. These evidence-based programs are departures from the past, specifically designed to reduce the probability of future high-risk confrontations or potentially harmful outcomes. Constant interface with key stakeholders in this process provides the best chance for success.
Our NLCRPD TEAM is thankful to all the stakeholders who contributed to the success of this individual as he continues his life’s journey.
Take a moment to reflect on why police departments spend so much time and efforts on officer training. Did you ever consider how you would handle similar emergent situations? How do the police de-escalate situations and have a peaceful outcome? What is the price of not being prepared for these types of situations – in both human and fiscal capital?
