A Quarryville man was sentenced to 25-60 years in prison on March 10 after being convicted of two counts of attempted homicide and one count of robbery after a three-day trial in January.
Robert Sheets, 34, was found guilty by jury of the offenses that occurred on August 14 and 15 of 2017 in a wooded area near Main Street in Conestoga, Manor Township.
Sheets picked up the victim, took him to the woods, shot him in the chest and left him. He returned the next day when he realized the victim was still alive, shot him in the back of the head and hit him with a hatchet on his head and neck. Sheets then left the victim again after stealing his wallet and cell phone.
The victim suffered a lacerated lung, extensive internal bleeding, three deep lacerations to his head and neck and a shattered jaw, but was able to crawl through cornfields to a home on Oak Road to get help.
Sheets was eventually arrested in Viginia after leading police on a 30-mile chase into Fauquier County a few days after the shootings.
Assistant District Attorney Jennifer Ponessa prosecuted the case and asked for at least a 30-year minimum sentence.
“Each of these attempted homicides were separate acts,” Ponessa said to Lancaster County Judge Dennis Reinaker. “He should not get double credit for trying to kill him two separate times.”
The victim was in the courtroom to observe sentencing.
Sheets’ mother read a written statement on his behalf before Judge Reinaker ordered sentence.
Reinaker sentenced Sheets to 15-30 on one attempted homicide charge and 10-30 on the other to run consecutive.
Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Michael Snyder filed charges.
