If you are a parent/guardian of a student in L-S School District you may want to consider attending tomorrow evenings Vaping Awareness Night. It will be an evening packed full of information and resources to help combat this growing epidemic. The information below was provided by the school district to outline what will be discussed.
It is not an exaggeration to say that vaping is an epidemic among teens. From 2017-2018 alone, there was 78 percent increase in e-cigarette use among high school students and a 48 percent increase among middle school students. Sadly, we are seeing that trend play out here at L-S; students are exposing themselves to unknown chemicals and health problems and setting themselves up for lifelong nicotine addiction. The best solution for vaping is not to start in the first place.
That is why we are hosting a L-S Vaping Awareness Night for parents, guardians, and concerned adults. Professionals from Caron Treatment Centers will address the following topics:
-Current trends in adolescent use of electronic vaping devices
-Information on the effects and consequences of electronic vaping products for youth
-Behavioral health concerns related to these products that cause a barrier to learning, including mental health and substance abuse issues
-Effective communication skills when talking to young people about these products
-Approaches to boost resiliency factors that help protect young people from substance abuse
-Local resources on addiction support
We hope you will join us for this important, informative event on Thursday, February 27th at 7:00 p.m. in the Lampeter-Strasburg High School cafeteria. The program is free and is geared toward middle and high school parents, but anyone is welcome to attend.
