The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office has approved a charge each of criminal homicide and recklessly endangering another person following the shooting that occurred in the 2000 block of Swarr Run Road this weekend.
Miguel Angel Rodriguez, 38, is accused of shooting and killing his girlfriend, barricading himself inside the residence, and shooting at police.
East Hempfield Township Police responded to the location after being dispatched for a report that the defendant called a friend and showed him the deceased victim via video chat. Upon attempting to make entry into the apartment police were met with gunfire from inside. Police proceeded to extract residents from neighboring apartments.
The Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) responded at approximately 2:30 a.m. and was also met with gunfire from multiple weapons. The defendant opened the apartment door and held a rifle outside scanning the area. No law enforcement member was harmed. Negotiators attempted to communicate with the defendant. The suspect was then shot once by a SERT member in the arm and shoulder area.
The Pennsylvania State Police have been called to investigate the use of force by the SERT member. District Attorney Heather Adams will decide on the use of force after the investigation is completed.
At approximately 6:27 a.m., SERT members were able to take Rodriguez into custody in front of his residence. The defendant exited the house after SERT officers deployed tear gas into the residence. The defendant is currently under guard in a local hospital and receiving treatment.
Upon entering the residence police found the deceased adult female victim, Nemesis Florentino, inside with one gunshot wound to the head.
At approximately 10:55 a.m., East Hempfield Township Police and Pennsylvania State Police entered the residence and observed multiple bullet impact points in windows, walls, and ceilings. Police additionally found blood spatter in numerous locations, a pistol on the bed next to the victim, and spent cartridge casings of various calibers throughout the floor.
Police also obtained a video sent by Rodriguez to a family member via the messaging application WhatsApp. Another voice message sent by Rodriguez to a family member said, “Hey I love you, forgive me for what I’ve done. I’m not turning myself in to the police and the police are there. Bye. Take care of my kids and all.”
Rodriguez is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
East Hempfield Township Police Department Officer Matthew Miller filed charges, which were approved by Assistant District Attorney Christopher Miller.
