Police in Lancaster County are heightening DUI enforcement operations for St. Patrick's Day weekend, a common holiday for intoxicated driving.

At least one stationary checkpoint is planned in Lancaster County for the weekend. Police also will be specifically targeting signs of impaired driving as part of roving patrols.

The Lancaster County DUI Task Force – a team of local municipal police officers – is conducting the operations, in conjunction with Pennsylvania State Police.

Sixty people died across the country in DUI-related crashes during the St.Patrick's Day holiday in 2016.

On average, more than 1,500 drivers are charged with DUI each year in Lancaster County, according to District Attorney Craig Stedman.

District Attorney Stedman advises those drinking alcohol this weekend, or anytime, to do so responsibly and travel by using designated drivers, local taxi services (like Yellow Cab), public transit and Uber/Lyft services.

"Making the responsible decision to not drive is a potentially life-saving choice," District Attorney Stedman said.
