A former Lancaster County funeral director, who plead guilty to four counts of abuse of a corpse and no contest to four counts of tampering with public records in October, was charged with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals and three counts of neglect of animals on Wednesday.
Andrew T. Scheid, 50 of Millersville, is accused of intentionally and knowingly causing the death of a bovine calf by starvation and dehydration sometime between November 1 and November 4 at his residence in the 300 block of Old Blue Rock Road. The calf was owned by Scheid.
On November 4, it was also discovered that Scheid failed to provide for the basic needs for animals he owned by failing to provide necessary sustenance and potable water. Two additional bovines were each found to be approximately 100 pounds underweight, and a cat was found in a cage without sustenance or water.
The aggravated cruelty charge is a felony of the third-degree; the three neglect charges are summary offenses.
Cassandra Byers, Scheid’s girlfriend, received a summary citation for her alleged role in the crimes as she shared responsibility in caring for the animals.
Scheid was recently sentenced to three to 12 months in prison with nine months house arrest and five months of probation to follow and has been in Lancaster County Prison regarding his previous conduct at his funeral home.
Defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Manor Township Police Officer Trevor St. Clair filed charges, which Assistant District Attorney Christie Wilson approved.
