Impaired Driver Charged with Homicide by Vehicle while DUI in June Crash

A 23-year-old Lancaster City woman is charged with homicide by vehicle while DUI, multiple counts of aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI and other related charges regarding a high-speed crash this summer that killed one and injured four.

West Hempfield Township police charged Renae Emerick in connection with the June 19 crash along Route 30 in West Hempfield Township.

Blood results of the defendant showed positive findings for marijuana and a prescription medication (Alprazolam).

A reconstruction of the crash revealed a silver Chrysler 200 driven by Emerick left its lane and crossed a grass median into oncoming westbound traffic. The vehicle collided head-on at a high rate of speed with another vehicle, with no signs of breaking, causing the death of one passenger.

The crash also caused injuries of a broken forearm, dislocated and fractured hip, torn left abductor muscle, left meniscus tear, right lung contusion and nerve damage to the left hand in one passenger; chest lacerations, internal bleeding, and intestinal issues to a second passenger; chest lacerations, ruptured intestines and face trauma requiring plastic surgery to a third passenger; and a fractured ankle requiring multiple surgeries to a fourth passenger.

West Hempfield police officer Ryan McKernan filed the charges; Assistant District Attorney Chris Miller approved the charges.

District Judge Miles K. Bixler arraigned Emerick Wednesday afternoon and set bail at $75,000 unsecured.

Emerick is presumed innocent.
