The Pequea Township Police Department is investigating a fraud incident reported on 5/21/21. A 74 year old female received a scam phone call from someone claiming to be from Reader's Digest stating she had won a prize of 2.5 million dollars and a new car. She was told she must first pay the interest on the prizes before she could claim them. She was then given instructions to purchase gift cards from various stores and then supplied the caller with the information. In total $4,000 in gift cards were purchased.
The Pequea Township P.D. reminds everyone to be vigilant against scam phone calls. Never provide information to unknown callers and remember that no legitimate business accepts gift cards as payment.
