FATAL VEHICLE ACCIDENT

On Sat, 01-12-19 at approx. 5:45 pm, officers from West Hempfield Township Police Department along with other first responders were dispatched to the 3600 block of Marietta Ave for a person struck.  Upon arrival, officers found that there were two individuals injured and that one victim was deceased.

Investigation thus far indicates that a group of individuals was crossing Marietta Ave from the parking lot of the Silver Spring Cemetery heading towards Saint Mary’s Coptic Church.  Two of the individuals, a 17 year old female and a 10 year old male,  were struck by a maroon Ford Taurus operated by a 17 year old female that was heading east on Marietta Ave.  The 10-year-old male was thrown into the westbound lane and the 17-year-old female was knocked to the side of the eastbound lane.  The male was struck at least once, possible twice by motorist traveling in the westbound lane.  One of the vehicles remained at the scene but several witness stated that a black SUV also struck the boy but continued traveling west without stopping.  The 10-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene and the 17-year-old female was transported to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital.  The 21-year-old sister of the injured 17-year-old female was also crossing Marietta Ave and may have been struck by accident debris causing a laceration to her head.  She too was transported to Penn Medicine Lancaster General Hospital where she was treated and released.  Additionally, the operator of the Taurus was transported to the hospital as a precaution but was later release.

Names will be released at a later point in the investigation.

The accident is still under investigation and police are asking that anyone who has information about the accident or has information about the black SUV to contact the West Hempfield Township Police Department at 717-285-5191 or 1-800-957-2677.
