On Friday, November 30, 2018 at 1812 hrs; Officers were dispatched to the T-Mobile Store at 3985 Columbia Ave for a theft that just occurred. It was reported that a male subject stole a cell phone from the store and fled the scene on foot with a store manager giving chase. Officers quickly arrived in the area and began searching for the suspect. In speaking with witnesses in the area, it was believed the suspect may have entered the Comfort Inn located on Abel Drive. Officers from Columbia Borough and East Hempfield Township assisted with searching the hotel and the suspect was found on the second floor of the hotel hiding near the vending machines. He was quickly taken into custody and positively identified by the manager of the T-Mobile Store as the suspect he had chased. The cell phone, valued at $749.99, was recovered and the suspect admitted to the offense.
The suspect was identified as Ricardo Joel Medina (23) of West Lawn PA. It was also determined that Medina entered the store with another male suspect, who also stole a similar phone and fled the scene. His identity is still not known.
Medina was also wanted on several outstanding warrants from the Berks County Sheriff’s Department.
Medina was taken to the police station and processed. He was later turned over to the Lancaster County Prison after being charged by Officer Gabe Rimolo with Retail Theft (M1).
All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
