On June 5, 2021 at approximately 11:23pm NHPD officers were on routine patrol in the area of West Main Street and South Shirk Road (Earl Township). Officers observed a motorcycle that had a registration plate obstructed. Officers attempted to stop the motorcycle, but it fled. Speeds reached in excess of 100mph. Officers discontinued following the motorcycle, but it was later observed again. Officers attempted to stop it once again, but it traveled through multiple backyards in the area of Mentzer Road (New Holland Borough). Officers again discontinued following the motorcycle.
At this point officers were able to identify the rider as Derek Lawson (age 23 of Ephrata). They discovered that Lawson had 2 active warrants for DUI and Simple Assault. It was also discovered that his driver's license was suspended due to a prior DUI. Officers located Lawson and the motorcycle, once again, a short time later on North Shirk Road (Earl Township). Officers attempted to stop him. He wrecked the motorcycle on Division Highway and fled into a field. He was found by officers after a brief search. After being arrested he was found to be in possession of a pipe used to smoke methamphetamine.
Lawson was charged with the above offenses and transported to Lancaster County Central Booking to await arraignment. He was later committed to Lancaster County Prison after failing to post $100,000 cash bail.
Lawson is presumed innocent.
