On March 21, 2020 at approximately 10:13pm NHPD was dispatched to a residence in the 600 Block of Maple Grove Road (Earl Township) for suspicious activity. It was reported that there were two people possible trying to gain access to his residence and that they may be there to steal puppies that he had for sale. Responding officers observed a suspicious vehicle parked up the street from the residence and stopped to investigate it. The vehicle was occupied by Jennifer Goldthwaite (age 41 of Flemington, NJ). A male later walked up to the vehicle and identified himself as the driver. He was identified as Christopher Gordon (age 20 of Flemington, NJ).
Neither of their stories matched as to why they were at that particular place so late. The original caller positively identified the duo as people that had come to look at his French Bulldog puppies earlier in the day. Officers took the two in to custody. Officers later looked through the windows of the vehicle they had been operating and discovered a box with 6 Golden Retriever puppies in it. Goldthwaite and Gordon would not say where the puppies had come from and Goldthwaite stated that they belonged to her. With the assistance of Ephrata Police, East Earl Police and PA State Police, all places that advertised Golden Retriever's for sale in the area were checked to see if any had been stolen. Several hours later, with the assistance of Ephrata Police Detectives, NHPD was able to locate a general area from where the puppies had been stolen. The owner of the puppies was eventually located and had not even realized that the two had stolen the puppies, but stated that they had been out earlier inquiring about them. The puppies were returned to the owner. The total value of the puppies came to just under $5,000.
NHPD charged both Goldthwaite and Gordon with the above offenses. Both were transported to Lancaster County Central Booking to await arraignment. Bail was set for each of them at $25,000 unsecured and they were released. NHPD encourages any agency to contact us if you had similar thefts.
Both Goldthwaite and Gordon are presumed innocent.
