In today's technological world, smartphones, tablets, and online communication present a whole new way for young people to become victims of sex crimes, bullying, and / or inadvertently breaking the law.  Below is a list of ten common smart phone apps that are popular among tweens and teens, that parents need to know exist and what they mean.  This list is by no means exhaustive as new apps are created every day.  An excellent online resource for parents to use is Smart Social.  The creators of this site and its accompanying YouTube channel showcase various apps and online tools, what they look like, what they are capable of doing, and what they are really used for.  This is an excellent tool for parents to stay "in the know" with their child's online / mobile activities.

This app looks like a calculator but functions like a secret photo vault.

A free online chat website that promotes chatting anonymously to strangers.

This is the way most teens communicate with each other.  Sending messages and snaps that disappear within seconds and stories go away after 24 hours.

Instagram
Many kids are now creating fake Instagram accounts, or "finsta," to hide content from parents. Kids also like to text using Instagram because most kids know parents won't check messages.
