Chief Rudzinski Announces The Retirement of Detective John Wettlaufer
DETECTIVE RETIRES HONORABLY AFTER 32 YEARS OF SERVICE
Detective Wettlaufer was hired by the Manheim Township Police Department on May 26, 1987 after graduating from Ledyard High School in Connecticut and Asbury College in Kentucky. He honorably served this department from that time until 1991 when he enlisted in the United States Navy and served his country during the Gulf War until late 1993. In early 1994, Detective Wettlaufer returned to the Manheim Township Police Department to continue his employment. In 1999 he was promoted to the rank of Officer-In-Charge and served as an Acting Sergeant after two supervisors retired. In 2002, Detective Wettlaufer joined the newly-formed Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team where he held several positions, to include sniper team leader. In 2005, he was again promoted to the position of Detective where he remained until the end of his career. Detective Wettlaufer also served as the department’s evidence custodian from 2016 to 2018.
During Detective Wettlaufer’s 32 years of service with the Manheim Township Police Department he has received numerous letters of commendation, awards, written notes of praise and thank you notes from citizens, as well as advanced his education. He received the Department Distinguished Service Award in 1996, Officer of the Year in 2004, and the Medal of Valor in 2011. He also received the Legion of Merit Award from Lancaster County SERT as well as the Medal of Honor from the Fraternal Order of Police. He also completed a Master’s Degree from Columbia Southern University in 2014.
“Detective Wettlaufer’s departure from Manheim Township will change the dynamics of the police department as he will be taking a wealth of knowledge and experience with him,” said Chief Rudzinski. “He possesses skills and training that very few officers ever attain in 32 years. He will be missed,” he said. Detective Wettlaufer’s last working day with the department will be Friday, March 1, 2019.
