SPECIAL NEWS RELEASE – TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT – SEPTEMBER 16, 2019

On Friday, September 13, 2019, officers from the Manheim Township Police Department performed a selective traffic enforcement detail, which targeted red light violations.  The detail involved four (4) police department employees and ran from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  A total of seventeen (17) motorists were stopped, resulting in fourteen (14) traffic citations for red-light violations and one (1) traffic citation and four (4) written warnings for other violations.

Data collected from crashes that occurred in Manheim Township in 2019 revealed that approximately 20% of those crashes happened on a Friday.  The police department also has its highest call volume between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., with crashes being the majority of these calls.  “We felt it prudent to use this data to direct our enforcement in order to improve the safety of the roadways,” said Chief Rudzinski.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) recently published a news piece which reported that crashes involving red light violations caused a record high number of deaths in 2017.  See the article “Red Light Running Deaths Hit 10 Year High” by clicking here.  Chief Rudzinski also noted, “This article provided us with just another valid reason why red-light violations should be targeted.”

Officers will continue to perform these type of enforcement details in the upcoming months.

End.
