TWO PEOPLE INJURED!
At 8:51 a.m., on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2021, Manheim Township Police were dispatched to Route 30 West between New Holland Pike and Route 222 for a crash involving a tractor trailer. Officers arrived on scene and located the crash on Route 30 West at Homeland Drive. Officers determined that there were three (3) vehicles involved in the crash; two (2) tractor trailers and one (1) passenger car. The investigation determined that all three (3) vehicles were traveling westbound in the left lane on Route 30 with the passenger vehicle traveling in between the two (2) tractor trailers. PennDOT workers started a rolling lane closure for road work that was further west up the road. As a result, the first tractor trailer slowed down. The passenger vehicle behind the tractor trailer also slowed down without incident. The tractor trailer behind the passenger car was unable to slow down within the assured distance ahead and struck the rear end of the passenger car. The force of this impact pushed the passenger car into the rear end of the tractor trailer in front of it, thereby causing the passenger vehicle to become "sandwiched" in between the two (2) tractor trailer vehicles.
Two (2) occupants from the passenger vehicle, the driver and one (1) passenger, were transported via ambulance to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither tractor trailer driver was injured. All three (3) vehicles sustained disabling damage, which caused the two (2) lanes of Route 30 west to close for almost two (2) hours, until the vehicles could be towed. Emergency workers were able to keep the westbound shoulder open to allow some westbound traffic to continue to move, albeit slowly.
The roadway fully re-opened just before 11:00 a.m. This crash remains under investigation and no further information is being released at this time.
