On 04/14/2019 at 1:10 PM, the LBPD along with Lititz Fire and Warwick EMS responded to the New Street Laundromat, 9 North New Street (Lititz Borough). A patron believed they heard gas "hissing" from the exterior gas meter. Upon the arrival of emergency crews there was no immediately obvious problem; i.e. the odor of natural gas, visual defect with the gas meter or sound of escaping gas. In an abundance of caution, a representative of UGI responded to the scene to investigate the condition of the meter.
During this time of investigation, North New Street between North Cedar Street and East Lincoln Avenue was closed to allow responders the space they needed to work. The closure lasted approximately 30 minutes and local traffic was detoured around it.
At the conclusion of the event, it was determined that what the reporting person heard was most-likely a properly functioning pressure release valve. Upon the determination that there was no concern for public safety the roadway was opened and responding crews cleared the scene.
At no time was there a potential or actual danger to the public. The LBPD wishes to thank everyone for their cooperation in using alternate travel routes and keeping the area clear while crews worked.
