Fatal Industrial Incident- Kunzler & Co. 652 Manor St. Lancaster, PA 2/28/2019
On Thursday February 28, 2019 at approximately 1052 hrs. Officers from Lancaster Bureau of Police Platoon C responded to Kunzler & Co. 652 Manor St. for a cardiac arrest. As Officers were en-route they were notified that a male had been found pinned under a piece of equipment. The male was injured and unresponsive.
When Officers arrived they found that members of the Bureau of Fire had arrived and were attempting life-saving efforts on the male in the form of CPR. The male had signs of injury to his head and body. The male was not able to be resuscitated and died at the scene. (Edit 3/1/19 Burton was transported to LGH by EMS and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital)
Officers spoke with employees and found that the victim was an employee of Eastern Lift Truck Co. Inc. The male was identified as Dave Burton M/55 of Felton, PA. Burton had been at Kunzler to repair an electric fork lift.
(2) employees of Kunzler came across Burton and found that he was pinned under the forklift. The employees had to use a 2nd forklift in order to free Burton. 911 was called and the employees started CPR. They were eventually relieved by Bureau of Fire personnel when they arrived.
Members of CID arrived to assist with the initial investigation. The Lancaster County Coroner's Office was contacted and a Deputy Coroner was dispatched to the scene.
This incident was found to be a workplace fatality and no criminal activity or intent was found. Absent any further details our department is not conducting and further investigation.
The Lancaster Bureau of Police extend their condolences to the Burton family as well as his co-workers and those employees at Kunzler that attempted to save and resuscitate Burton.
