On Tuesday May 16, 2017 at 2242 hrs. Officers from Platoon B responded to St.Mary's Church at 119 S. Prince St. for a report of a Burglary in-progress. A witness had observed a male pulled open a locked door to the church and then enter the building.
Officers established a perimeter around the building. A male, later identified as Ruben Umbarto Nazario M/40, exited the front center doors. Nazario was detained by Officers. Officers made entry to the church with assistance from a K9 unit. The building was searched and no one else was found inside.
Nazario was arrested for Burglary. He was found to be in possession of improvised burglary tools that were used to enter the building. Nazario was transported to the Lancaster City Police station for processing.
As a result of the incident on 5/16/2017, Off. Nicholas Langan charged Nazario with (1) Count Burglary (F1) and (1) Count Possessing Instruments of Crime (M1). The complaint was filed before MDJ Witkonis. Nazario was later arraigned on the complaint and committed to LCP in lieu of $20,000 bail.
Det. Toby Hickey will be charging Nazario with (2) additional Burglaries that occurred at local churches on Sunday May 14, 2017. Those incidents occurred at St. Joseph's Church 438 St. Joseph St. and the Annunciation Orthodox Church 64 Hershey Ave. Those burglaries were listed on the Police Log published 5/15/2017. Det. Hickey will obtain warrants for Nazario for the additonal burglaries and have them served at LCP.
All persons accused of a crime are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
