Ephrata Police have completed the investigation of fatal vehicle accident that occurred on August 2, 2018 at 11:45 p.m., at the intersection of West Main Street and Oak Street, Ephrata Borough. A motorcycle, traveling eastbound on West Main Street approaching Oak Street, struck the rear of a sedan, also traveling eastbound on West Main Street, as the sedan turned left onto North Oak Street. The sedan was driven by Mark Russum, 52, of Ephrata. The motorcycle rider, Clayde D. Martin-Martin, 27, also known as Clyde D. Martin, of Manheim, sustained significant injuries, was transported to Lancaster General Hospital and died from his injuries on August 3, 2018.
The Ephrata Police Department accident reconstruction team investigated the crash with assistance from the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office. The reconstruction team used roadway, vehicle and post collision evidence to determine a speed range of 66-78 miles per hour for Martin’s motorcycle just prior to the collision. The speed limit is 35 miles per hour. A toxicology analysis revealed that Martin’s blood contained methamphetamine and that his blood alcohol content was 0.098%. The primary contributing factors to this collision were speed and intoxication.
Mark Russum will not be charged with any violations.
