On April 14, 2018 at 7:47 p.m., Ephrata Police were dispatched to a parking lot at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital to assist a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Deputy with a prisoner resisting arrest. Upon the arrival of Ephrata Police, the prisoner had escaped the custody of the deputy and ran into the Cocalico Creek while handcuffed with a chain restraint belt. Police attempted to rescue the escapee and called the fire department water rescue team for assistance. The water was approximately 12 feet deep. The escapee was found deceased in the creek at 9:22 p.m. The incident is being investigated by the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office Detectives, Ephrata Police, and the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office.
