Vehicle Accident / Pedestrian Struck
At 6:15pm on February 11 2019, East Lampeter Township Police were dispatched for a pedestrian struck in the 200 block of Monterey Rd in Upper Leacock Township.
It was determined that a 19 month old girl was struck while walking in the northbound lane by a 1996 Dodge Ram pick-up truck operated by Donald Eckman JR of Nottingham, PA. The pedestrian is the daughter of Isaac and Ruth Beiler of Bird-In-Hand, PA.
The girl suffered multiple injuries and was transported to Lancaster General Hospital before being moved to Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital where she is listed in serious but stable condition. Mr. Eckman was not injured. A medic helicopter was unable to respond due to the existing weather conditions.
The investigation is ongoing, however, preliminary reports indicate that the child had been outside playing in the snow with siblings and wandered onto the roadway. Speed is not considered to be a factor in the crash; the truck was able to come to a controlled stop immediately after impact. Mr. Eckman called 911 and helped to provide care for the child until EMS and police arrived.
East Lampeter Township Police was assisted by the Manor-Hempfield Crash Team of which East Lampeter Township is a member. The roadway was closed until 8:40pm for investigation. Bird-In-Hand Fire Department provided personnel, fire police and lighting at the scene. Also assisting was LEMSA and Leola Ambulance.
The crash investigation will continue and additional information will be made available as it becomes known.
The pedestrian (19 month old girl) has been released from the hospital and is currently at home.
