Spring has finally arrived and many of us will tackle the task of "Spring Cleaning!" Over the winter months, branches and other yard debris accumulate on our properties. A popular method for disposing of yard waste is by burning. Open burning is permitted in East Earl Township by ordinance number 209-2020. However, ordinance number 209-2020 sets some guidelines and restrictions on open burning.
- All fires must be kept under personal supervision of a Responsible Person (see attached ordinance for definition).
- Burning is only permitted between sunrise and sunset. (There is an exception for burning wood or wood products for recreational or ceremonial purposes, or to cook food, as long as the fire does not exceed 6 feet in diameter).
- All fires must be at least 75 feet from ANY structure.
- Fires may only consist of untreated wood, brush, and yard waste.
- These items are PROHIBITED (this list is not all-inclusive): aerosol cans, appliances, automobiles, automotive parts, batteries, carpets, demolition waste (insulation, shingles, plaster, siding, etc.), diapers, feces, furniture, garbage, household hazardous waste, mattresses, box springs, metal, paint, plastics, petroleum products, rubber products, solvents, tires, treated wood, waste oil, wire or putrescible waste, and any substance determined by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to be a hazardous substance.
- Fires are prohibited during a Fire Ban Emergency.
Persons found in violation of the Township burning ordinance could be issued a summary citation and, if convicted under the Pennsylvania Rules of Criminal Procedure, be sentenced to pay a fine of not more than $300.00 plus court costs.
