On September 6, 2025, several Federal, State, and Local agencies collaborated on a train derailment exercise in the River Park and surrounding area. The Borough of Columbia would like to thank everyone involved with this very successful drill. Many volunteers from fire services around the County and neighboring Counties participated, along with representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency, Lancaster County Emergency Management, Columbia Borough Emergency Management, the Columbia Fire Department, Norfolk Southern Railroad, and the Columbia Borough Police Department.
By all accounts, the drill was a success, and much was learned through the collaboration. Participants managed the tabletop incident in an emergency operations center, and boats from various first responder agencies physically placed barriers in the water to simulate the containment and clean-up process.
Thank you to all who gave of their time to help make this training exercise a success.
